Being a Crew Leader is more than a job - It is work that feels good and has a purpose preserving, conserving and protecting our public lands for future generations.

  • You don’t already need to be a “leader” to qualify for this position! Instead you only need to be passionate about improving your leadership and mentoring skills. The IIC and professional land managers will guide you in teaching your crew about the outdoors and why we do the projects we do.

  • It gives you the opportunity to explore unique and beautiful terrains unknown by the general public.

  • It also is one of the BEST opportunities to network with a wide range of land management professionals on the job - getting your foot in the door to become a member of a National Park Service, National Monument, Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management team after your internship! (Successful crew leaders have some of the quickest and highest rates of placement into professional federal jobs in our internship program!)

  • You will also have the chance to create an everlasting bond and memories with your fellow crew leaders and crew members as you go throughout the season.

  • On your off days you will have an opportunity to explore and learn about the area you are serving. Potentially getting to know the locals and hidden “gems” that the average tourist won’t know about.

Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of a Crew Leader is leading and supervising a group of 4-5 fellow peers/college aged crew members on a variety of projects for local public land agencies in areas such as recreation, wildlife, maintenance, re-vegetation, restoration, facilities, and other related fields. They will have the chance to work and learn under our partners at the National Forest Service, National Park Service, National Monument and the Bureau of Land Management. Carried out in outdoor environments, these projects are in a variety of locations and climates under the supervision of professional agency mentors.

  • This position requires the ability to coordinate projects and logistics with crew, public land managers, and IIC staff while managing all operations of crew efficiently and independently.

  • The ability to ensure proper clothing, equipment, essentials, and tools are available daily while maintaining program structure and ensuring risk management procedures are met.

  • The ability to create a meaningful, while fun, work environment for youth members while communicating tasks clearly and effectively in both oral and written format.

  • The skill in adhering to all rules and regulations as stated in the IIC Intern Guidebook while maintaining daily log and photo documentation of crew, projects, and work completed.

  • This position will hike over uneven terrain and do some strenuous physical activities.

  • Be able to check on Crew Members while out camping or staying at a bunk house and making sure they have the proper gear and enough food and water for the week.

Qualifications:

  • The candidate must be at least 21 years or older and possess a valid driver license.

  • Have solid outdoor leadership skills, teaching ability, vigorous work ethic, positive attitude, maturity, and flexibility and the ability to pass a background check, including a fingerprint analysis.

  • This position requires the successful candidate to complete, in good standing, a paid three-week field training period working alongside fellow crew leaders and land managers.

  • Have some familiarity with basic hand and power tools as well as some knowledge of trail building, fencing, facility maintenance and interpretation.

  • The attitude and willingness to protect and improve our public lands and to educate and teach crew members and the public about it

Preference is given to candidates with:

  • Wilderness First Aid certification (or greater), Leave No Trace training, Chainsaw A Cert and Prior conservation or land management experience.

Must be willing to camp out and stay at a bunk house for the work week (Monday-Thursday)
